Composite Fillings

Composite fillings are a tooth-colored alternative to traditional silver colored amalgam fillings, and are used to replace areas of decay in a tooth. The materials are made from porcelain and composite resins, which are colored to match your natural tooth enamel. Because they are less noticeable than amalgam fillings, they can help to maintain and improve your natural smile.

Aside from material and tooth color, composite fillings also tend to be more durable than other types of fillings, often restoring the tooth to its near original integrity.

There are actually two types of composite fillings, direct and indirect. Direct composite fillings are performed inside the mouth, where the filling material is inserted, shaped and hardened. This is the most common type of filling.

Indirect fillings are done outside the mouth, and are usually reserved for dental crowns and bridges. For these types of fillings the tooth is cured for a longer period of time in an extra-oral curing device.
